Aims Outcomes Teaching Methods Assessment

The module aims to help participants develop professional statistical skills - in the integration of technical knowledge with practical data-analysis; in the use of different modes of communication; in working in groups; in locating and applying new techniques; and through an appreciation of the professional responsibilities of a statistician. The module is organised around a sequence of projects drawn from practical statistical experience in a variety of areas, typically including social, medical, environmental, and other scientific fields, and current affairs and business. Work on some projects is undertaken individually, and some in groups. In the latter case groups may contain students studying away from Sheffield, and then a subsidiary objective is to gain experience in working collaboratively at a distance. Work on each project is presented by students in both written and oral form, with guidance from tutors. Round-table and electronic discussions of issues raised by projects and the work on them form an intrinsic part of the learning. Some informal lectures are offered on problem areas and statistical techniques which students may not have met elsewhere. Role-play forms a part of several projects.

  • Introductions to report writing, group work and presentations.
  • Project work giving the opportunity to the student to develop skills in integrating theoretical knowledge with the demands of practical problems.

Learning outcomes

  • inform him or herself about new statistical topics;
  • be prepared to embark on an extended personal study of a statistical problem for the summer dissertation.

Assessment is via continuously assessed project reports, some individual and some collaborative. Collaborative groups submit a single project supplemented by short individual reports, and the grade is awarded based on both components.
