The module helps to prepare statisticians for the workplace - in integrating technical knowledge with practical data-analysis; in communicating (in writing and orally) to non-specialists; in team-working; and through an appreciation of the professional responsibilities of a statistician. Students undertake a sequence of projects drawn from a variety of areas such as social, medical, environmental, and other scientific fields. Work on some projects is undertaken individually, and some in groups. Informal lectures are offered on: presentation skills (written and oral); team-working; personal reflection, with an emphasis on learning from experiences acquired through project work.

AimsThis unit aims to
- give the opportunity to students to develop a professional approach to data analysis and to presentation of results;
- give experience of both individual and group work on practical statistical problems.
Learning outcomesBy the end of the unit, a candidate will be able to
- apply statistical methods in practical situations;
- prepare written statistical reports tailored to the needs of specific readers;
- prepare oral presentations of statistical work;
- work effectively in groups to achieve goals defined by other professionals.

No lectures, no tutorials, 20 practicals
Assessment is via continuously assessed project reports, some individual and some collaborative. Projects will be assessed on their technical content, the quality of the presentation, and suitability for the target reader. Collaborative groups submit a single project supplemented by short individual reports, and the grade is awarded based on both components.
