This module builds on skills developed in MAS6005 Professional Skills for Statisticians. Having developed skills and confidence in presentation, team-working and problem-solving, students will be challenged with a series of more demanding ‘consultancy-style’ problems. These will be open-ended and may be tackled with a variety of approaches. Students will practise conversing with ‘clients’, formulating problems statistically, identifying appropriate analysis strategies, and will develop experience and confidence as applied statisticians. There will be group and individual projects. Students will use their technical knowledge acquired from other modules, and may also need to learn new methodology independently.

Prerequisites: MAS6005 (Professional Skills for Statisticians)

Aims

This unit aims to
  • expose students to the challenges of working on demanding, open-ended statistical consultancy problems;
  • give students the opportunity to further develop a professional approach to data analysis and
  • to presentation of results;
  • improve the confidence of the students as professional applied statisticians.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the unit, a candidate will be able to
  • devise and implement appropriate statistical analyses in a consultancy environment;
  • prepare written statistical reports that clearly describe complex analyses to the non-specialist reader;
  • inform him or herself about new statistical topics.

Teaching methods

MOLE course materials, discussion boards and a small number of project briefing lectures.

Assessment

Assessment is via continuously assessed project reports, some individual and some collaborative, and observation of real-time client interactions. Written projects will be assessed on their technical content, the quality of the presentation, and suitability for the target reader. Collaborative groups submit a single project, supplemented by a short individual reflection offering assessment of their own work and that of other members of the group.
